Living and working at Stokeworks means: new friends, awesome meals, great office facilities, and last but not least a lot of sun, sand and waves. I absolutely enjoyed this beautiful and peaceful destination in the countryside of Portugal. Work hard, travel harder! The magical beaches and the stunning surroundings that the Algarve has to offer inspired me a lot. A must for next year.

I needed a change of scenery from the cold scandinavian climate and Stokeworks in the southwest of Portugal offered me everything I was looking for.  I really enjoyed the beaches and the beautiful countryside surrounding the estate. Working at Stokeworks was absolutely fantastic. The coworking space is very comfortable and the laid back atmosphere helps a lot to focus on things. Finishing the day with a nice dip in the sea is something that I will definitely miss.

I had a really good time at Stokeworks. It’s the perfect place to get your work done and enjoy the beauty of the Algarve.
The workspace is big, light and comfortable to work. I also met some great people during my stay. At Stokeworks they are always in for a good laugh. Thanks for showing me beautiful and (also) hidden places around Burgau!
If I get the chance, I’ll come back for sure!

Spending 1 month at Stokeworks was really a great experience. I found an interesting community of coworkers, made some new friends, and exploring the stunning natural surroundings was awesome too. Marius is a really fun guy, I was made to feel very welcome. Very recommendable if you are looking for a comfortable and quiet base camp from which to explore the area and work in a good atmosphere.

Really lovely place to get stuff done while still being able to enjoy the beauty of the Algarve.
I highly recommend staying here!

Despite having the privilege of being able to work location independent I do mostly prefer working around others. It highly improves self-motivation and gives me some company. The informal and friendly atmosphere plus the awesome people at Stokeworks absolutely fit my bill.

The other thing that I love about the place is that guests are happy to share knowledge with one another, which again helps a lot with your personal and professional growth. Last but not least I appreciate Stokeworks’s philosophy towards a healthy work-life-balance. Most coworkers are fairly dedicated to their work however when the surf is good we take a well-deserved break for a common surf. To me this is exactly the ideal combination that I have been always searching for.

I have spent two months at Stokeworks as I needed a low cost, comfortable base to live and work. I’ve met some interesting people coming through the doors and there are regular social gatherings and trips to the surf. The surrounding area is beautiful and great for runs and hikes.

LOCATION

Leave the grey concrete jungle behind

Your home away from home – a haven of greenery

We’re located in the midst of the Costa Vicentina National Park, which is undeniably the most beautiful part of the Algarve – far enough away from the hustle and bustle of Algarve’s built up tourist areas, giving little opportunity for distraction, noise, sensual overload and the stifling proximity of the city. The property is situated in a lovely, laid back location. It offers a relaxed, welcoming environment and is situated in an idyllic, lush green grove full of pine, cork and eucalyptus trees. The accommodation is bright and flooded with natural light. It has the relaxing ambience of a subtropical, countryside oasis which helps you to gain a fresh perspective, realign your focus, allowing you to recharge and to rest your mind. On the premises you’ll find large, old, shady trees as well as plenty of open space.

Proximity to urban amenities

There is absolutely no road traffic here. However, should you wish to take a trip into town, then the property still offers very easy driving access to the urban amenities of Lagos, Sagres as well as the west coast beaches. The small town of Burgau, which is only a 4 mins drive away, offers the nearest surf beach and a number of bars, cafés and eateries.

Perfect starting point for surfsessions, trips and exploration

The south-western Algarve is a mecca for people who like to be physically active and share a passion for the great outdoors. With it’s unique geography, the two coasts, it’s wide swell window and the, all-year-round, mild climate it is literally designed for surfing. With one coast facing predominantly west and the other south, if there is any swell around, there’s usually good waves somewhere – the surf here is very consistent.

Our accommodation offers the ability to travel between both of Portugal’s south and a west- facing coastlines, in a relatively short time – a major benefit from having both south and a west- facing coastlines is the likelihood of finding the right swell size in combination with offshore wind conditions.

Within a 5 – 30 min drive, from Stokeworks, you can choose from over 20 beaches! With so much choice available you could even score multiple sessions in one day.

Even if you haven’t caught the ‘Surf bug’ yet, don’t worry, there is always something to do here. With the Costa Vicentina National Park on your doorstep there is so much to discover.

Serendipity happens here, not in a reclusive hotel room

Everything else you always wanted to know but didn’t dare to ask – FAQs

What is the working environment like?
Participants work on their own tasks whilst sharing an open plan office. Mutual exchange and support takes place on a voluntary basis. Etiquette in our coworking space is no different to what’s expected in any office environment or collaborative hub.

No, access to the work-space is available at all times. However, we do have core-working-hours (9am – 6pm) inside the office where we ask you to be considerate of your coworkers needs.
Is Stokeworks a good place to socialize with your fellow coworkers?
Definitely, we encourage a communal spirit as this is basically the pivot-point of a coworking/coliving place, both work-wise and in your downtime. What matters most is that you are truly keen to dedicatedly work on your projects and contribute to a motivational and productive atmosphere.

What will my accommodation be like?

There is no prescribed time, unless all rooms are full.
Is a rental car required?
If you are a keen surfer and want to have access to all the surfspots the South-Western Algarve has to offer then having a set of wheels is definitely a good idea. In the Algarve car rentals are available at an unbelievably low price. Outside the peak season you will rarely have to pay more than 10€/day.  We recommend to pick up/return the car at the airport in Faro as it’s most convenient/cheapest.
We also appeal to our guests to share costs for rental cars and petrol.

Given we are a community and wish to interact we encourage communal dinners/BBQs and try to host them at least once a week.
Do you offer surf classes?
Nope, but we are happy to recommend qualified surf-schools nearby.
Do I have to surf to join the Stokeworks?
No. Even though we are avid surfers ourselves, surfers and non surfers are equally welcome.
What matters most is that you are keen to work on your project(s) and contribute to a good productive vibe.
What is the best time of the year to come to Stokeworks?
Basically every time of the year is good for a stay at Stokeworks as every season here has it’s highlights.
The Algarve has a well deserved reputation for being an all year round destination.

Surfwise:
The winter is great for surfing as swell is guaranteed, and even though the west-coast often gets maxed out in winter a number of south coast gems come to life! Another benefit is that the waves are less crowded in winter.

Weatherwise:
Although the mornings and evenings can get chilly in winter wearing short sleeves during the day, even in January, is not uncommon. Please note that our residence has two wood-burners that will keep you blissfully warm. Furthermore each bedroom is equipped with a powerful convector heater.

What is the surf like?

The Algarve coastline offers an endless range of surfing experiences to accommodate all levels of expertise.
Not only are we blessed with one of Europe’s mildest climates, the region also has one of the widest swell windows in the continent as it has two coasts. It is these two very different coasts that make for such a special surfing location. With one coast facing predominantly west and the other south if there is any swell around, there will always be waves somewhere, as the Atlantic ocean picks up swell from an array of angles, from different weather systems. The surf here is very consistent.

In order to save you from driving around for hours, wasting time and fuel we are of course happy to give you hints on where to go.

If you are not a surfer yet, but want to learn, then we are happy to recommend qualified surf schools nearby.
What is there to do besides surfing?
The south-western Algarve is a mecca for people who like to be physically active and share a passion for the great outdoors. With it’s unique geography, the two coasts, it’s wide swell window and the all-year-round, mild climate it is literally designed for surfing.
Even if you haven’t caught the ‘Surf bug’ yet, don’t worry, there is always something to do here. With the Costa Vicentina National Park on your doorstep there is so much to discover.
Go hiking or rent a bike and explore the surroundings. There are bike rental possibilities nearby offering decent bikes from 10€/day.
Horse riding is also quite popular here. On flat days stand up paddling tours and kayaking are great fun.
If you are into golf this area is heaven for you. There are three exclusive golf courses within a 10mins drive.
Dolphin & whale watching tours are also a big attraction
, just to mention a few.
Or check one of the many flea-markets in the region, explore Lagos, visit the Monchique mountain range, etc…

Join our Workouts!
We erected a massive gym-rig on the site, that allows up to four people to work-out at a time.
Workouts with a focus on how to surf better are regularly mentored by us.
We often put up a slackline which helps a lot with surf balance.
